Seasonal FAQ's

Send us your garden questions via the contact us button.
Q: When is the BEST time to plant tomatoes?
A: April is the best month to plant because soil temperatures are rising and availability is at its peak. Rarely does planting earlier yield an earlier crop unless plants are protected in the cooler nights in March. May plantings are very successful but availability of varieties is shrinking quickly.

Q: You stock more than 50 varieties of tomatoes. How do you choose which ones to plant?
A: Generally we recommend planting more than one variety because our quirky summer weather favors something different every year. We recommend “hedging your bet” (a little plant humor) by planting some sure-fire varieties like Early Girl or Celebrity every year then adding varieties that intrigue you. We provide a list of our varieties grouped by types like – flavorful, cherry types, paste types, heirlooms, early varieties and more.

Q: Is there anything I can do about grubs in my vegetable garden without danger to myself or my earthworms?
A: Yes, you can spray with Bonide Grub Beater, which contains Neem Oil from the Neem Tree or use beneficial nematodes to control them.

Q: I want to reseed my sparse lawn. When is the best time and what kind of seed should I use.
A: March through May and September through October are your best months for reseeding. If you don’t know what kind of lawn you currently have, bring a sample of the turf to the Info Center for ID. It is important to match variety so the lawn looks even.

Q: Is there anything I can do about Peach Leaf Curl now that my tree has leafed out?
A: Yes, you can spray it with GrowMore Seaweed Extract. If the tree is small, pick off damaged leaves before spraying. Pick up damaged leaves that fall to the ground. After a couple of treatments new growth will emerge clean.

Q: Last fall raccoons tore up my lawn. I was told there was something to do in the spring to prevent their appearance. What?
A: We recommend using Bayer Season Long Grub Control in April and again in August. The raccoons were harvesting grubs. Prevent grubs, prevent raccoon damage.

Q: My tomato plant leaves look spotty or funny. What’s wrong?
A: There are many possibilities. Bring some fresh samples to the Info Center. We have some excellent pictures of tomato problems for diagnosis assistance.

Q: My fuchsia is all contorted and looks like it has peach leaf curl on the new growth. What is going on?
A: It sounds like Fuchsia Gall Mite. Unfortunately it is difficult to control. We recommend you cut off all the new growth (where the damage is visible) then apply a Bayer product that works systemically. Come to the Info Center for details.
